During the Vancouver Olympics in February 2010, Microsoft Corporation and NBC provided live Silverlight video streaming for the Vancouver Olympics. This effort involved a dedicated data center (“Olympic Origins servers”) combined with Internet Information Server (IIS) smooth streaming servers to provide up to 30 concurrent live video streams. The system generated over 12 petabytes of data, and at peak loads streamed 374 gigabits of video per second and handled 2.4 million pages per second. With 82 million mobile page views, 1.9 million mobile video streams, and 5,000 hours of live and on-demand video, the Olympics streaming video system was a wonderful demonstration of Microsoft technology and media platforms. Wintellect supported this effort by creating the health monitoring tools to monitor and ensure the reliability of the overall system.

PriceWaterhouseCoopers engaged Microsoft to help them build a proof-of-concept (POC) application related to enforcement of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), the goal being to provide it to businesses in order to perform due diligence risk assessments of potential partners. Microsoft’s Looking Glass product is a Social Network Analytics and Marketing tool that is the result of a two-year effort by the Developer and Platform Evangelist (DPE) team. The tool was originally planned for an open source Codeplex release and has since morphed into a targeted retail product release for Fortune 500 customers. The original project was a prototype and therefore was not architected to a production-ready level. Microsoft needed to re-work and enhance the UI design of the tool as well as re-migrate the code fully to Silverlight 4, and architect the backend code using the Model-View-ViewModel (MVVM) pattern to support unit testing, modularity, scalability, and robustness within the application.

K–NFB Reading Technology, a joint venture between Kurzweil Technologies and the National Federation of the Blind, has propelled reading technology forward for the last 30 years with the invention of omnifont OCR, flatbed scanners, text-to-speech technology, and reading machines for the blind. Now K-NFB is redefining the boundaries of the printed word via Blio – a new generation in eReading software. This free application works across platforms and presents books as they are intended: in full color and as laid out by the publisher.

The goal for the Blio project was to create a smart, intelligent e-reader that provides the same layout, fonts, and full-color images that you enjoy in the print version of your favorite titles. Blio also provides the ability to read aloud to the user, highlighting each word as it goes, so you can follow along. This and much more was accomplished by a combined Wintellect and K-NFB team using Microsoft’s latest client technologies.

CCH SFS provides accounting firms with applications to support managing their business and preparing and processing business tax returns with the United States Treasury and IRS. CCH prepares and processes approximately 33% of the business returns in the US, some of which are tens of thousands of pages long.
