Power Collections 1.0 for .NET 2.0 RTM

I've posted an updated Power Collections 1.0 that has been recompiled (with slight source changes to address some base class library changes) for the released version of .NET 2.0. No new functionality has been added, nor has the documentation changed.

I'm coming to this party a little late I'm afraid - I just discovered for the first time how badly the built in framework collection classes suck (or rather, how many huge holes there are) and I recalled having heard of the PowerCollections project as a way to fill some of those.

I noticed a couple of things that still seem to be missing though and I was wondering if you were considering adding them for a future version of PowerCollections.

Firstly, I really miss the provision of concrete implementations of the ReadOnly*Base abstract classes backed by the underlying type, eg a ReadOnlyDictionary backed by any IDictionary. The framework provides ReadOnlyCollection (which IIRC is confusing because it actually implements IList) but not ReadOnlyList or ReadOnlyDictionary.

Another useful addition would be an equivalent to the KeyedCollection class in the System.Collections.ObjectModel namespace. I find this class terribly frustrating because it sounds so useful but manages to fail to be because (a) it's inherently writable, which makes it useless for returning from a public API even though that's it's stated intent, and (b) it's abstract when all it needs is one method that could easily be supplied as a delegate to the constructor, and (c) it conflates two unrelated functions - the fact that there it's usable both as a List and a Dictionary, and the fact that the key is dynamically extracted from the value (a concept that would be equally useful on any other Dictionary).

The general idea of a class that is usable both as a List and a Dictionary, maintaining an order and providing efficient access by both index and key, is a very useful one. It would be nice if PowerCollections provided a full set of classes around that idea. Whether to also provide dictionaries that extract the keys from the values is a separate question, although I think it might be useful.

Nevermind about the readonly stuff, I found Algorithms.ReadOnly now :)

Still think KeyedCollection workalikes would be useful, though.

Peter,

Didn't yet played with power collectioin but definitely would liek to know how different this could be from generics. I remember i had gone thru the msdntv show on power collection .Can you suggest the difference between the two and which one would be faster??

Looking at the source code of the Insert method in RedBlack.cs I got worried over the node.IncrementCount(). What happens when InsertSplit causes a rotation (two red children) and the node gets repointed to an ancestor node. Would this ancester node get an IncrementCount twice? Could that be a bug?

I have not a testcase to proof this, and I am not into the red black algorithm... so... ;-)
